New Beginnings

Maybe it’s time to start blogging again…

I enjoyed it while working in Peru for Kiva and in Guatemala for MBAs without Borders. Those blogs are gone now but it was a nice way to share my experience.

As it’s time for a new experience and a new city I think I’ll start jotting my thoughts down.  After years of working on my PhD (with another few months to go) and five and half years as a student at Carleton University in Ottawa, I’ve begun the next stage of my career as an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.

There’s a lot to love about Royal Roads and their model of education (applied and experiential learning, small class sizes, entrepreneurial spirit in their course development), not to mention the gorgeous campus… but there’s one aspect that scares the bejeezus out of me… online education.  I know how important it is to the university and the role it can play for our students, namely keeping their day jobs and living far away.

Over the last few years, I’ve become quite comfortable in the classroom. I still get nervous, but it’s the good nervous. I wonder what classroom skills I’ll be able to translate to the online environment. I wonder how different the students will be. There are a lot of great resources here and my fellow faculty members have been wonderful and will help when they can, but it’s a whole new medium for me.

I’ll let you know how it goes!

  1. Hi Rob, Nice looking blog! I love the cartoon - I've been in a couple of moocs. Interesting that you worked for Kiva. I've been a kiva lender for some time now. I think I'm up to 30 loans. Hopefully your experience in this course will help put you at ease with teaching online - at least once you've had some time to reflect on it when it's over. Terri

    1. Hi Terri. I loved working for Kiva. I would be happy to share any information about them or answer any questions.

Teaching online is just one brand spankin' new component to this career move. Lots going on all at once.
